Description

Folios 311-312: Edward William Campbell Richard Owen, HMS Nemesis, Downs. He refers to correspondence, which he encloses, given him by gunner Samuel Gooderham. It concerns a request from Captain Thomas Baker, his predecessor as captain on HMS Nemesis. He encloses papers and certificates relating to gunner Gooderham and adds that he supports his application to join a ship of larger rate. He draws attention to the fact that the gunner had served aboard HMS Zebra under Captain Robert Faulknor during the attack on Fort Royal (sometimes Fort Louis) at Martinique.

Folio 313: enclosure to folios 311-312. Letter dated 7 October 1800 from Evan Nepean, Admiralty Office to Captain Thomas Baker, HMS Nemesis, the Downes. He writes about the request in his earlier letter that gunner Samuel Gooderham be appointed to HMS Standard. He explains that while the gunner has been put on the list of candidates for promotions there are others ahead of him.

Folios 314-315: enclosures to folios 311-312. This document contains a number of copy certifications from captains attesting to the service of gunner Samuel Gooderham these include. Captain Robert Faulknor, Captain Rochard Bowen, Captain George Vaughan, Captain Lancelot Chapman, Captain Norborne Chapman, Acting Captain Richard Lilburne, Lieutenant Stephen Perdrieau, Captain Thomas Baker and Thomas Sparke all stating he served under them on HMS Zebra. Document certified by Captain OwenFolio 316: enclosure to folios 311-312: Statement from Captain Edward William Campbell Richard Owen dated 15 March 1802 confirming that Samuel Gooderham has served as the Master Gunner on HMS Nemesis since 8 January 1801. He further attests to the accuracy of the copy certificates of service at folios 314-315.
