Folios 284-285: James Oughton, HMS Windsor Castle, Spithead. At present he has no chaplain and so he asks for the Admiralty to approve the appointment of Reverend William Walter from HMS Formidable.
Folios 286-287: enclosure with folios 284-285. Letter dated 11 January 1802 by William Walter, HMS Formidable. He explains that his bishop has advised him that he must take priest's orders if he is to progress in his profession. HMS Formidable is about to sail to foreign parts and this will prevent him from following his bishop's advice. To do this would not only be to his disadvantage but incur the censure of his bishop. He would like to take some leave and then join Charles Otter's ship. The Captain of the Formidable approves of his request
