Folios 172-173: James Oughton, HMS Windsor Castle, at Sea. He writes that a seaman on board his ship, William Cogan, has asked for his help. When a midshipman on board HMS Nymphe, he had R put against his name in her books. He is anxious to have that removed. Captain Oughton had deferred from applying to have this done immediately as he was hoping to come across Captain John Cooke to acquaint himself with the circumstances. This has not happened and as both the young man and his family are anxious that this designation be removed Captain Oughton now applies to the Admiralty. He records that Mr Cogan has done his duty on HMS Windson Castle both on the Fore Top and as a Coxswain and during that time he has given complete satisfaction. He came into the Navy in February 1783 and since that time has only been absent 6 weeks. He sayes that Captain Cooke gave him leave to go to sick quarters in Plymouth and while he was there HMS Nymphe sailed. Thereafter the mutiny broke out and he was told by Captain Cooke to stay where he was. That was the reason why he did not rejoin her.
