Folios 172-173: James Oughton, London. Advises that Mr. Atwood received the bounty on board HMS Garland but he has frequently been unable to perform his duty due to severe rheumatism.
Folios 174-175: enclosed with folios 172-173. Petition dated 20 December 1798 by Henry Atwood, Master's Mate , HMS Hecla, Isle of Brain, Sheerness to the Admiralty. Advises he was Chief Mate in the Robert from Jamaica when he was impressed on board HMS Sybil, now called HMS Garland and was immediately sent to the Squadron then off Texel. Due to severe rheumatism he was sent on board HMS Spanker, Hospital Ship, then lying at Sheerness. After recovering, he was sent on board HMS Hecla which was then ordered against Ostend. His illness returned and often disabled him from doing his duty. Asks to be discharged, due to his ill health and particularly as his friends have procured him part of a vessel in the Barbados trade. John Attwood, 46 Chapel Street, Pentonville and Elizabeth Deligal, 5 Kings Row, Pentonville, testify to the truth of the petition and confirm they are prepared to purchase part of a vessel should he be discharged.
