Description

Folio 73: George Oakes, 11 Upper Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, London. Encloses a memorial on the subject of his half pay.

Folio 73A: [Blank].

Folios 74-74A: enclosed with folio 73. Memorial dated 9 August 1793 from Captain George Oakes, 11 Upper Brook Street, Grosvenor Square, London, to the Admiralty. Petitions to be allowed to draw his half pay from the end of 1792, which has been stopped because he was in the East Indies at the outbreak of the war, and was not able to reach England within the six month period given in the offical notice in the Gazette recalling half-pay officers. On the day he learned of the war he wrote to Vice Admiral William Cornwallis, Commander in Chief, East Indies, to offer his services and subsequently when Pondicherry was blockaded he again offered his services to Sir Charles Berkeley, Governor of Madras and served as a volunteer in that siege. At its conclusion Admiral Corwallis gave him public despatches to carry back to England, but he was taken prisoner by the French on the voyage home. Duplicates of those despaches were carried home by the Swallow packet.
