Description

Folios 207-208: George Norton, The Depot of Arras. Memorial of George Norton, Commander. Having been upwards of seven years in captivity in France employed at Arras in the distribution of large sums sent from England for the distressed Prisoners and has had during the same period the Superintendence of Schools where several hundreds of younger Captives were daily educating; besides continual demands upon him to visit the Hospital & Jail where his advice & assistance were often successfully asserted in procuring parole to Officers passing through. He requests to be granted some remuneration, as they have already done to the Chaplains and Surgeons resident at the Depots.

Folios 209-209A: enclosure with folios 207-208. Letter dated 9 September 1814 by George Norton, 35 Red Lion Street, Holborn, to the Admiralty. Thanks for his promotion to Commander. Request for employment. [Mentions] The Memorial requesting to be granted some remuneration for services to his fellow Prisoners in France.
