Description

Folios 177-178: Francis Newcombe, HMS Wanderer, River Gironde. Covering letter for the enclosed order dated 31 August 1813 - only came to hand this day, in obedience to which he acquaints you that the person mentioned:- George Masterman whose case he is directed to state:- deserted from HMS Wanderer on 29 January 1814 while refitting in Portsmouth Harbour, he is 29 and rated Able Seaman and appeared by HMS Wanderer's Books to have been a volunteer & received the Kings Bounty and with respect to his being in an ill state of health as mentioned in the letter is truly false.

Folios 179-180: enclosure with folios 177-178. Letter dated 28 August 1813 by George Masterman, Stillingfleet near York, to the Admiralty. Writing on behalf of his Son, he were impressed (into HMS Wanderer - Captain C, now Captain Francis Newcombe Commanding) six years ago on his passage from Danzig to Hull and remained in the service ever since; the greatest part of his time stationed in the West Indies, which has severely impaired his health, and am fearful will inevitably cost him his eye if he remains much longer on board of Ship. He requests his Sons Liberty, his Son's name is George Masterman.

Folio 181: enclosure with folio 177-178. [Memo] dated 31 August 1813 by William Nowell Captain Superintending Port Duty, HMS Monmouth, Downs, to Captain Francis Newcombe, HMS Wanderer. "It is my Direction that you report to me, for their Lordships Information, a State of the Case of George Masterman; also his Age and Qualifications; and if he has been impressed, when, where, by whom, and from what Vessel; returning the Enclosure with your Report to" [Verso] This order only received in the River G 27 May 1814.
