Description

Folios 171-172: Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, at Sea. Covering letter for the enclosed Copies of orders issued by him upon falling in with HMS Creole and HMS Astrea [Astraea].

Folios 173-176: enclosure with folios 169-170: [Four Copy Letters] [1] Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, St Jago. To George William Henry Knight, Commander and Acting Captain of HMS Surprize [Surprise]. Dated 17 March 1814. Letter states in consequence of an Action off the Cape de Verde Islands between HMD Creole and HMS Astrea [Astraea] and two French Frigates in which Captain John Eveleigh of HMS Astrea [Astraea] was slain. Orders appointing him as Captain of HMS Astrea. [2] Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, St Jago. To George William Henry Knight, HMS Astrea [Astraea]. Dated 17 March 1814. It being expedient for HMS Severn, HMS Greole, HMS Surprize [Surprise] & HMS Astrea [Astraea] should sail immediately in quest of the enemy Frigates in this area. You are required and directed notwithstanding his former Order to repair on board HMS Astrea [Astraea] and take Command of her as Captain. [3] Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, St Jago. To Benjamin Ashley, HMS Surprizs [Surprise]. Dated 17 March 1814. It being expedient for HMS Severn, HMS Greole, HMS Astrea [Astraea] & HMS Surprize [Surprise] should sail immediately in quest of the enemy Frigates in this area. You are required and directed notwithstanding his former Order to repair on board HMS Surprize [Surprise] and take Command of her as Captain. [4] Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, St Jago. To Benjamin Ashley, Acting Commander of HMS Astrea [Astraea]. Dated 17 March 1814. Orders you are required and directed to repair on board HMS Surprize [Surprise] taking upon you the Command of her as Acting Captain.
