Description

Folios 169-170: Joseph Nourse, HMS Severn, at Sea. Reports that cruising under the orders of Admiral Sir John Warren with HMS Surprize [Surprise] in company he anchored on the 8 March 1814 in Port ? in the Cape de Verde Islands and received information that an action had taken place between HMS Creole and HMS Astrea [Astraea] and two French Frigates the Etoile [L'Étoile] and Sultane [La Sultane] and that after a good deal of fighting the French Frigates made the their escaped, the Sultane [La Sultane] with the loss of her Main & Mizen Masts and the Etoile [L'Étoile] perfect in Masts, that HMS Astrea [Astraea] had lost her Mizen Mast and her Captain (John Eveleigh) amongst the killed. [Total of two sides with details, mentions:-] Mayo, 26 February 1814, 28 February 1814, 15 March 1814, Siera Leone, Captain McKenzie [George Charles Mackenzie], Senegal, Palma, destroyed 60 Sail of Vessels, the losses in HM Frigates he understands not to be severe somewhere about eight killed in each ship and no Officers but Captain John Eveleigh.
