Folios 136-137: Thomas New, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Reply to letter dated 4 September 1806 and he states the case of Thomas Chalk. He was impressed at this Port and regulated by him it appeared that on the Impress Boat boarding the vessel the Officer observed Thomas Chalk employed in working her and having every appearance of a Common Seaman, when questioned he said he was Mate - his protection being demanded, he said the Master had it, pointing to William Richards 9the person mentioned in the application) William Richards hearing the conversation came up and said to Thomas Chalk "you know you are the Master" on which the latter replied "I am" William Richards was doing duty on board and the officer deeming him the real Master brought Thomas Chalk on shore. On Investigation it appeared that William Richards was on the Register as Master until April 1806 when the name of Thomas Chalk was inserted.

Covering letter for the enclosed petition and an Affidavit in support thereof from the Owner of the Ship of Swansea for the discharge of the Master of the same, who was impressed on 18 August 1806 .

Folio 142: enclosure with folios 138-139: Affidavit dated 23 August 1806 of William Richards of Padstowe, Cornwall. Sworn at Swansea before Whilliam Phillips Commissioner. . That he William Richards is the joint owner of the Brig Maria of the Port of Padstowe and that Thomas Chalk was Master.
