Description

Folios 27-28: James Nash, Regulating Officer, Leith Rendezvous. Covering letter for the enclosed papers as per their Order dated 16 April 1804 together with the enclosed applications from Commissioners of the Customs at Dunbar. He has with the assistance of Captain Campbell of HMS Texel impressed nineteen Fishermen from the neighbourhood of Dunbar, their names were previously sent as having been concerned in smuggling the circumstances of which their Lordships will have been fully described in the Collector and Controllers letter to him from Dunbar. [Folio 28] A List of the Men's Names, ages and number of Children. [List of nineteen men].

Folios 29-30: enclosure with folios 27-28: (No 1) Charles Lerimer[?] & George Campbell, Customhouse, Dunbar. To Captain James Nash, Regulating Captain, Leith. Dated 8 November 1805. States being directed by an Order from the Honourable the Commissioners of the Customs at Edinburgh dated 27 April 1804 "that even when it is merely known in general that Fishermen from any Town have been employed in smuggling that we give notice thereof to the nearest Officer of the Impress Service" They acquaint you that 39 Anhers[?] of General and Brandy were lately seized in two Ceneralments[?] near to Red Hugh[?] and near to Cove, by the officers of Excise at Dunbar. [Total of two plus sides with more details and a list of 27 men from Red Hugh, Cove & Bilsdean].

Folio 31: enclosure with folios 27-28. Letter dated 19 December 1805 by (No 2) Westgarth, Custom House, Edinburgh, to Captain James Nash, Regulating Officer, Leith. Dated . Referring to a letter which the Collector & Comptroller of Dunbar have stated to the Board they wrote you respecting Fishermen at Red Heugh[?], Cove & Bilsdean who had been concerned in smuggling, & in answer to which letter the Collector & Comptroller state you had informed them that a vessel would be sent to impress the said Fishermen. He has been commanded to request you will acquaint him for the Boards information, if any further steps have been taken in this matter.

Folio 32: enclosure with folios 27-28. Letter dated 23 December 1805 by(No 3) Morris West, Custom House, Edinburgh, to Captain James Nash, Regulating Officer, Leith. States having laid before the Board your letter of 20 December 1805 (in answer to his letter dated 19 December 1805) in regard to a vessel being dispatched by Captain Campbell of HMS Texel commanding in the absence of Admiral Vashon to endeavour to secure the Fishermen residing at [Redleigh?], Cove & Belsdean supposed to have been concerned in smuggling. He acquaints you that a copy of your letter has been sent to the Collector & Controller at Dunbar with directions to render every assistance.

Folio 33: enclosure with folios 27-28. Letter dated 19 December 1805 by (No 4) Charles [Lerimer?] and George Campbell, Customhouse, Dunbar t Captain James Nash, Regulating Officer, Leith. By last post they received a letter from the Honourable The Commissioners of the Customs, acquainting them that you are to apply to Captain Campbell of HMS Texel, to dispatch a vessel to endeavour to secure the fishermen at the brecks in this Port who have been concerned in Smuggling. He take the liberty to mention, that if an Impress Cutter appears on this part of the coast in the Day Time they are apprehensive it will give an alarm to all the Seafaring People, and that the Fishermen in question will run.

Folio 34: enclosure with folios 27-28. (No 5) Letter dated 27 December 1805 by Merris West, Custom House, Edinburgh, to Captain James Nash, Regulating Officer, Leith. Reply to letter dated 26 December 1805 [about his request for a Revenue Cutter] To take the Impressed men concerned in Smuggling.
