Folio 177: Thomas New, Regulating Officer, Swansea. Acknowledges the letter of 13 October requesting a report on the escape from the Cleveland tender. It appears that Lieutenant Shrapnell left the keys to the Press Room in an open part of the cabin. One of the crew went off with them during the night, freed the men and escaped with them. He was likely bribed - some money was taken from a Privateer. Captain New has taken steps for him and the escaped men to be arrested. He finds that Lieutenant Shrapnell has a weakness bordering on insanity and has replaced him with Lieutenant Bennett. Encloses a list of the slops supplied to the Pressed men. [not present]. The remaining 20 pressed men on board the tender are seure thanks to the efforts of Lieutenant Bennett.
