Description

Folios 122-124: Martin Nevile, HMS Port Mahon, Plymouth. Responds tot he letter of 15 April and describes the circumstances around the pressing of men from the Stag merchant brig at Poole. Describes his general approach with regard to pressing men. All men on boats passing up and down the river are examined. Lieutenant Marshall went on board the Stag on 13 April and there appeared to be men and boys on board who were not covered by the Protection. There also appeared to be a deserter on board. Describes in great detail subsequent events. The Stag was the only vessel at Poole which attempted to carry more men/ boys than allowed by the Protection. On arrival at Plymouth, he discharged the raised men into HMS Dreadnought according to the orders of 14 April, and will return to Poole.

Folio 125: enclosure with folios 122-124. Letter dated 14 April 1803 from George and James Kemp and Co, Poole, to The Admiralty. They are the owners of the Stag, Master Edward Spencer. They had a Protection for their vessel to take 10 Seamen and 50 Fishermen to Newfoundland, but when they were unable to fill that number they took on a few aged men and boys from workhouses or the parish, and clothed them at their own expense. They did not apply for Protection for them. Captain Nevile removed the boys despite them being unsuitable for service and refused to give back their clothes. They offered 2 Seamen in their place, but Captain Nevile refused, and the vessel has now sailed without them.
