Folios 75-76: Harry Neale, HMS Royal Charlotte, Hope Reach. Sends details of the case of John Pearce. It appears from his statement that 20 men had permission from Captain Snow, each with a Certificate of enrolment in the Marine Fencible Corps, to work on board HMS Winchelsea and the Walmer Castle. He was informed that 12 of the 20 were already on board the Winchelsea. He hired a wherry and was in the process of getting out of the Gravesend Boat in whic he had taken his passage, when he was detained on account of alterations in his certificate. The certificate appears to be carelessly completedand the description does not match exactly. Captain Snow gives details in his letter which do not match the man's statement. Captain Neale believes the man does belong to the Marine Fencibles Corps and Captain Snow has added the circumstances in his zral to obtain the man's discharge.
Folios 77-78: enclosure with folios 75-76. Letter dated 20 December 1803 from J R Snow, Commander of Marine in the Harbour Service under the direction of Captain Neale, Groome Hill, Greenwich, to The Admiralty. Statement that he encouraged the man to assist in rigging HMS Winchelsea. The certificate was altered as it was the only one left. Requests his discharge, and another man will be found in his place.
Folios 79-80: enclosure with folios 75-76. Letter dated 16 December 1803 from Samuel Mottley to The Admiralty. Responds to the letter of 14 December regarding John Pearce. Gives details of his pressing.
Folio 81: enclosure with folios 75-76. Certificate dated 3 October 1803 of Membership of the Corps of Harbour Marines, signed by Mayor Price, witness John R Snow, in the name of John Pearce.
Folios 82-83: enclosure with folios 75-76. Letter dated 10 December 1803 from John R Snow, Harbour Marine Headquarters, London Schooner, Greenwich, to The Admiralty. Request for the discharge of John Pearce, with details about his pressing.
