Description

Folios 270-271: James Newman, HMS Mermaid. He refers to an order given on 31 July 1795, a copy of which he encloses, He has finally settled the damage and demurrage incurred in the capture of the schooner Caroline off Altona. He writes to justify the amount of his claim and explains the anxiety it has caused him having such a large debt hanging over him.

Folios 272-274: enclosure to folios 270-271. An account filed at the Court of Admiralty of the expenses incurred in respect of The Caroline, master Henry Smith Skinner and dated 23 August 1797.

Folio 275: enclosure to folios 270-271. Copy order from Evan Nepean of the Admiralty to Captain James Newman HMS Ceres, Nore dated 31 July 1797. He refers to the events surrounding the claim made against Captain Newman by the Danish ship The Caroline. He is ordered to adjust the damages through negotiation with the claimants and when he has done that the Admiralty will reconsider the matter again.

Folios 281-282: enclosure with folios 270-271. HMS Mermaid Ship's log for 6 March 1799 to 9 April 1799.

Folios 281-282: enclosure to folios 270-271: Remarks which appear to be the ships log.
