Description

Folios 264-265: James Newman, HMS Mermaid, Plymouth. He announces his arrival and gives details of his movements over the past several days. He sailed from Lough Swilly on 28 October 1798 with the HMS Canada, Foudroyand and the William Pitt and parted with them the next day off Urris Head (probably Erris Head) on 1 November he met with Captain Roddam Home of HMS Caesar who informed him that on 28th he and HMS Terrible, Melpomene fell in with three French frigates and had his maintop gallant mast shot away by the enemy. As a consequence he had to fall back and let HMS Terrible and Melpomene to close quickly on the enemy, firing all the while. Captain Newman sayes he made a signal on 1 November 1798 to a line of battle ship who was escorting a frigate and a disabled ship which he assumes were HMS Terrible and prizes as they were off Kilala Bay which is where Captain Home had said the action took place. Sir John Warren had also got news of them and set off to Kilala Bay to give support. He encloses a list [not present] of the ship's defects and his weekly account [not present] , which he forwards by Sir Richard King.
