Description

Folios 239-240: James Newman, HMS Mermaid, Plymouth Sound. He writes about a seaman named Samuel Wilkinson who was sentenced to 300 lashes in November 1797 for desertion. Half the sentence was carried out immediately. HMS Mermaid was then ordered to San Marco. The man is on the supernumerary list and so receives food only. Since receiving his punishment he has acted diligently and cheerfully and Captain Newman asks the Admiralty to remit the remainder of his punishment but also to allow him to be entered into the ship's books so that he can be both paid and clothed, especially as the harsh weather has meant that Captain Newman thought it right to give him appropriate clothing as he had no pay to buy clothes himself.
