Folios 96-97: James Norman, HMS Medusa at Cove of Cork. States that there are a number of young gentlemen on board HMS Medusa who are in great want of education. He thinks it necessary that there should be a Chaplain and Schoolmaster on board. Requests that Reverend Richard Lloyd resident here to be Chaplain and George Bates to be Schoolmaster, a Gentleman well skilled in the theory and practice of the art of navigation and of good moral character.
Folios 98-99: enclosure with folios 96-97. Certificate dated 30 April 1793 by John Whitaker, First Lieutenant, and [?], Master, on HMS Medusa at the Cove of Cork. Assessment of George Bates suitability as Schoolmaster.
Folio 100: enclosure with folios 96-97. Certificate dated 30 April 1793 by Edward Bourk and Laurence Roche attesting to the moral character of George Bates.
