Description

Folios 169-170: Clement Milward, HMS Herald, Spithead. Reports his arrival at Spithead from Jamaica after seeing the convoy safely in. HMS Rinaldo was dispatched on 16 September 1815 with the Trade bound up St George's Channel. Encloses a copy of his orders, state and condition and defects report on HMS Herald and also a copy of the orders given to John Undrell, Captain HMS Rinaldo. States that his main mast was struck by lightning before he left Port Royal and was so badly damaged as to require shifting. Adds a postscript that HMS Herald has on board 640 thousand dollars worth of gold bullion for the merchants.

Folios 171-172: enclosure with folios 169-170. Orders dated 16 August 1815 from Captain Clement Milward, HMS Herald to Captain John Undrell, HMS Rinaldo. Orders that upon arrival at a certain longitude and latitude and on a red ensign to part company, he is to protect the vessels bound up the English Channel and deliver them safely, before proceeding to Spithead.

Folios 172-173: enclosure with folios 169-170. Orders dated 22 July 1815 by Rear Admiral John Erskine Douglas, on board HMS Shark, Royal Harbour to Captain Clement Milward, HMS Herald. Orders to make the signal for convoy to England and to set sail on 28 July 1815 with the vessels under his protection. From Negil, he is to set sail with all of the trade vessels on 30 July 1815 and travel through the Gulf of Florida to their destination. HMS Rinaldo will join at Havannah and proceed with the convoy. Upon arrival for the trade bound to Cork and Bristol through St Geroge's Channel, Captain John Undrell is to take charge of these and the rest of the convoy to proceed with HMS Herald to the Downs and then Spithead.

Folio 174: enclosure with folios 169-170. Defect Report dated 24 September 11815 on HMS Herald, signed by John Antrill, Carpenter and Captain Clement Milward, HMS Herald.
