Description

Folios 231-232: Robert Mends, Southampton. Sending papers relating to the case of John Gibson, Seaman belonging to HMS Thunderer which he commanded 15 years ago, who was sent to Port Royal Hospital, and whom he had not seen since.

Folios 233-234: enclosure with folios 231-232. Letter [n.d., unsigned but from John Gibson] to Robert Mends, the Recistance [HMS Resistance], Portsmouth. Asks him to be the means of keeping him out of the workhouse, having only being able to earn £0 3s 0d in 4 months. He has applied for a merchant seaman's pension, and has been told the Lord Collingwood is registered at Scarborough, so he should apply there.

Folios 235-236: enclosure with folios 231-232. Letter dated 31 December 1814 from John Farron {?], Admiralty Office to John Gibson, Anchor Sloop Alley, St George's in the East [London]. Regarding his petition of 27 December [1814], he is instructed to advise him that his late Captain must apply on his behalf before the R against his name can be removed. [Also on folios 235-236: ] Letter dated 13 January 1815 to Robert Mends from John Gibson giving details of his service before 1809 when he was discharged, and subsequent injury when on the Lord Collingwood bound for Lisburn there was a skirmish with a French privateer. Asks Mends to apply to the Admiralty to remove the R from his name as he never deserted from the Service and they have done wrong to keep him from his money so long.
