Folios 103-104: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reports that, as directed, he asked Lieutenant Thomas Eborall to apply for Thomas Smith, who had been committed to the New Bayly Prison at Salford, as he had confessed to being a deserter from HMS Spartan. Encloses a letter from Lieutenant Eborall and also one [not present] from the governor of the prison asking for payment of charges incurred by the prisoner. Smith, who was born in Manchester, says he deserted from HMS Spartan in Halifax. Captain McLeod considers that he is unfit for service because of a gunshot wound to his leg which Smith claims was incurred at Trafalgar and a later injury to his hand while aboard HMS Spartan in the Bay of Naples. He is being held aboard HMS Princess until the Admiralty decides what to do with him.
Folios 105-105A: enclosed with folios 103-104. Letter dated 18 January 1813 from Lieutenant Thomas Eborall, the Impress Service, Manchester, to Regulating Captain Donald McLeod, HMS Princess Liverpool. Reports he has sent Thomas Smith, a deserter from HMS Spartan, to Liverpool by coach.
