Folios 93-94: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Reports that John Guest was impressed by Lieutenant James Walker on 11 January and was born in Whitehaven. He said he was Mate of the Mary from Youghall, but had no certificate. The complaint about the keys of the vessel being seized arose because the Master refused to receive them without his Mate. They have since been returned.
Folios 95-96: enclosed with folios 93-94. Letter dated 12 January 1813 from Messrs Degar, Holding & Ball, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Report that the Mary of Workington, John Lowrie, Master, arrived the previous day from Yougall with a cargo of grain consigned to them, but when they asked for a sample of the cargo they were told that the Mate, whom they believe was J Guest, was impressed and taken aboard HMS Princess with the keys to the cargo hatches in his possession. Ask for the mate to be discharged or, alternatively, to consign the cargo to the government.
