Description

Folios 320-321: Donald M'Leod [MacLeod], Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Receipt of request for further details in the case of Nathaniel Crawford. It has long been the custom for Mates of ships to be allowed to stay on shore until 8 in the winter and 9 in the summer as no fire or candle is allowed on board and so they cannot cook. He was certainly impressed before 8 and he would not have detained him but the Officer told him he had raised a mob which attacked the gang. He subsequently found this was not the case, as stated in his report of 10 [November 1812] . As the man was on board HMS Pirncess he did not then feel justified in discharging him without an order.

Folios 322-323: enclosure with folios 320-321. Letter dated 15 November 1812 from Thomas Kaye, Proprietor of the Courier, Liverpool Courier Office, to J W Croker, Secretary to the Admiralty. Writes concerning his relative Nathaniel Crawford, Mate of the Belmont belonging to Messrs Bolton & Littledale, about whom the letter of 12 [November 1812] to them states that he cannot be discharged as he was impressed on shore. He was within the time allowed for Mates in commission to be on shore. If the decision cannot be altered, he asks what payment or substitues might be required to obtain his discharge.
