Description

Folios 240-241: Donald M'Leod [MacLeod], Regulating Officer, Liverpool. A man calling hiself William Bennett was impressed by Lieutenant Walker as an Ordinary aged 23 born in C[..]s. He said he belonged to the local Militia and produced a pass for a James Bennett of the Congleton local Militia but did not fit the description, so he assumed he was an impostor. John Yeoyard was impresed by Lieutenant Walker on 29 [Septembner 1812] as an Able Seaman aged 20, born in Workington. The Protection for him and the crew of the Fortune was not received until after he was sent on board.

Dolios 242-243: enclosure with folios 240-241. Letter dated 31 October 1812 from J Galloway, HMS Princess, Liverpool, to J W Croker, Admiralty, London. Encloses a letter from the Captain and Adjutant of the Congleton Local Militia claiming William Bennett as an enrolled Private. He was sent on board the ship from the Rendezvous on 26 [October 1812].

Folios 244-245: enclosure with folios 242-243. Letter dated 30 October 1812 from L Martehill, Captain and Adjutant, Congleton Local Militia, to the Officer Commanding HMS Princess, Liverpool. Lieutenant Colonel Trafford, Commandant of the Royal Congleton Regiment of Cheshire Loal Militia directs him to request the release of William Bennett, a balloted man for the township of Great Sutton in the Hundred of Wirral, County Chester, whose term of service will not expire before 21 March [1813].

Folios 246-247: enclosure with folios 244-245. Letter dated 27 October 1812 from William Bennett, HMS Princess, to Colonel Trafford, Congleton. He was impressed last night in Liverpool going there from Goston [sp?] after his watch. The ticket he had from Captain Madgett said James Bennett in place of William Bernnett. He was balloted in March 1809.

Folios 248-249: Undated letter from James Savage, Master of the Fortune, care of A T Patteson, Liverpool. His Chief Mate John Yeoward was impreswsed on Thursday night because of the lateness of the hour. Reminds them of the gallant defence the Fortune made against the French privateer on 13 April 1811 for which a 12 month Protection was granted dated 27 October 1812 which only came to hand today. Encloses a certificate and asks for his discharge on account of his gallant conduct in the action. The vessel is fitted out with a letter of marque against the Americans and is about to sail.

Folio 250: enclosure with folios 248-249: Printed certificate dated 22 October 1812 from John Imrie [sp?], Collector. James Savage, Master, and John Yoward [Yeoward], Mate of the Fortune of Liverpool entered the Custom House for the Brazils and gave bond.
