This company commenced as South Yorkshire Coal Railway and Canal and Goole and Doncaster Railway, but according to report filed with minute of 27th August 1846 did not obtain any act of incorporation as such.

Under act of 22nd July 1847, company was incorporated as South Yorkshire Doncaster and Goole Railway. Name of company was changed to South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company under South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Act of 1850.

Company was leased for 999 years to Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company by South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Transfer Act 23rd June 1864, but under South Yorkshire Railway and River Vesting Act of 16th July 1874, South Yorkshire Railway and River Dun Company was dissolved and vested in Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company.

Under act of 26th August 1889, Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company was incorporated and took over from Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company the River Dun Navigation together with Dearne and Dove Canal, Stainforth and Keadby Canal, and Sheffield and Tinsley Canal, and this Sheffield and South Yorkshire Navigation Company became vested in British Transport Commission under the Transport Act of 1947.

Name of Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway Company was charged to Great Central Railway under act of 1st August 1897, and Great Central Railway became part of London and North Eastern Railway Company from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.
