Description

Folios 385-386: Donald McLeod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Advises that Lt Walker had received information that a constable from Bolton had brought back Richard Hall, a deserter from HMS Wolverine, to be returned to the fleet, and that he had enlisted him as a recruit for the 2nd Regiment of Lancashire Militia. McLeod applied to the General, who sent the man to the Rendezvous. Hall said he had a ticket of leave for 14 days but did not return to his ship, and about a month ago he was apprehended by Constable Birch and brought to Liverpool. He was put in irons every night, then entered for the militia and received £11, of which the constable took £8.11 from him. McLeod says this kind of fraud is common. Also sending a letter from Lt Col Trafford of the Congleton Regiment, in re Thomas Barlow. It seems a man calling himself Thomas Gobourn was impressed by Lt Evans on 28 July, and claimed he was mate of the Mary and Ann, and had used the sea four years. He has since been identified as Thomas Barlow, a deserter from the Congleton Regiment - so McLeod asks for their Lordships' directions.

Folios 387-388: enclosure with folios 385-386. Letter dated 15 August 1811 by Lt Col Trafford of the local militia, saying Barlow had been enrolled on 4 February 1811 in the Congleton Regiment under his command, for 4 years, but is a deserter to be given up to his sergeant as he had not appeared for the training and exercise in June.
