Description

Folios 372-373: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty query of 12 August, says 1. that John Reynolds was impressed by Lt Evans on 19 July, an able seaman aged 27, and came here as mate of the Nassaw, taken on shore at 11pm. He had been intended to go as master of the Three Brothers, a vessel he had previously commanded, but had no papers to prove it. 2. Sends a letter from Captain Galloway regarding John Williams, whose case McLeod stated in his letter of 29 July - viz that he had been impressed by Lt Evans on 23 July, as an able seaman, aged 43. He said he had served in the Navy for 14 years, and was currently mate of the Devon, but was taken ashore at 11pm.

Folios 374-375:enclosure with folios 372-373. Captain Galloway's letter dated 13 August 1811 enclosing one he has received from John Williams, and saying what the man has written is correct, that he knew him to be a gunner's yeoman in the Queen, and considered a very good, attentive man. However his health seems to be as he describes and Galloway feels that if his case is presented to their Lordships he would be discharged upon the payment of £40, in view of his previous service.

Folios 376-377: enclosure with folios 374-375. Letter dated 8 August 1811 by John Williams, aboard HMS Princess, saying he cannot afford the £80 discharge fee, as he is a poor man with 3 small children, and asking for his long service to be taken into account, from the 'Spanish Armament to the year 1802' when he was paid off from the Bellisle, Captain John Whitby[?] - and at 45 his health is he says 'on the decay'.

Folios 378-379: enclosure with folios 372-373. Letter dated 7 August 1811 by John Foster, surveyor to the Corporation of Liverpool, asking for the case of John Reynolds, master mariner, to be considered. He had been impressed but was a couple of years ago the commander of a vessel and then was unemployed so accepted the post of chief mate for other ships, currently the Three Brothers - asks for his discharge, if need be with payment of a reasonable sum.

Folios 380-381: enclosure with folios 378-379. Sworn statement from Thomas Jones and John Marshall of Liverpool, merchants, owners of the Three Brothers, and confirming that he had been master of the vessel on her recent voyage to Cadiz, and they want him as master again for her next voyage.
