Description

Folios 350-351: Donald McLeod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty query of 27 July, regarding William Thomas, Terry Rice, John Hervey, George Turner, and Richard Doran, who were all found to be unit for the service upon survey at Plymouth. McLeod has consulted the surgeon appointed by HMS government, and encloses his reply about the four surgical cases, also the surgeon of HMS Princess, and with respect to John Hervey (said to be unfit from age and infirmity) he says the man is on the books as a volunteer, seafaring man, aged 38, and was to all appearances in both health and strength.

Folios 352-353: enclosure with folios 350-351. Letter dated 31 July 1811 by John Jeffold, Surgeon, HMS Princess. Confirms that all five men were considered fit by him, and during their stay on board ship never complained of 'the slightest indisposition'. They were all found healthy also when examined prior to their transfer to the tender, and he describes each man, closing with his suspicion that at least two of them might have taken measures not uncommon in the Army and Navy to get themselves rejected.
