Folios 346-347: Don McLeod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty letter of 26 July, says John Williams was impressed by Lt Archbold on 23 July as an able seaman, aged 43. He said he had spent 14 years in HM Navy and then became mate of the Devon. He was taken by the gang on shore at 11pm.
Folios 348-349: enclosure with folios 346-347. Letter dated 24 July 1811 by William Keen, 43 Byrom Street, Liverpool, saying that John Williams is a family man of almost 50 and formerly in the Royal Navy, who had signed up for Keen's brig the Devon, as chief mate, for a voyage to Portugal. He was looking after the valuable cargo of woollens for the use of the British Army there and had remained on board until 9pm but as no fire or candle is allowed on the ship he had then gone home for supper, returning with his wife a little later - but as he was about to board the ship he was impressed and taken to the Rendezvous. Now aboard the Princess. Keen is anxious to get his vessel to sea and Williams's family must be anxious for his discharge, so hopes their Lordships will consider the case.
