Folios 330-331: Donald McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty query of 25 July says that Thomas Young was impressed by Lt Mather on 21 July, an able seaman aged 21, born in Salisbury. He said he was mate of the Elizabeth.
Folios 332-333: enclosure with folios 330-331. Letter dated 22 July 1811 by Withers Martin, Liverpool, saying that Thomas Young is employed by them as mate of the trade vessel Elizabeth, master Matthew Scallum, and she is currently waiting to sail with a cargo worth no less than £30,000. He was impressed being ashore after 9pm but he had been intending to stay aboard the vessel all night ready for an early morning departure and only had to make a necessary trip home - it has been implied he was intoxicated but they can prove he was not, and is always sober and honest. Indeed with such valuable cargo they can only employ the most trustworthy of men.
