1811 June 21
Folios 202-203: Don McLeod, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Replying to Admiralty query dated 18 June, says the case of John Selick had been addressed in his letter of 29 October last, in which he referred them to Captain Carter's letter of 26 May 1810, as he had regulated the man. John Corson was impressed by Lt Evans on 12 June 1810 and also regulated by Captain Carter, who reported on him 5 July 1810. Henry Harvey, on the books at the Rendezvous, was impressed by Lt Clarke on 11 January 1810. An able seaman, aged 35, he said he had been born in North Carolina, had lost his protection but had served 7 years on the Emerald. He was also regulated by Carter. James Cunningham was impressed by Lt Evans on 20 May, an able seaman aged 25, and said he was born in Maryland. He did not know the man who had sworn him to be an American, and seemed to know nothing of the place either - he was examined in the presence of the American Deputy Consul here, and had come lately from Londonderry. John Hall was impressed by Lt Evans on 17 May, an able seaman aged 28, says he was born in Baltimore. He had been taken on information from a local man called John Jackson, who claimed to have known him well for over 4 years and had heard him say he was born in London (and he wrote to his father-in-law there) and had gone to America some 10 years ago where he obtained a protection. McLeod says he is quite certain that this man and Cunningham are both fraudulent.
Folio 204: enclosure with folios 202-203. American printed protection no. 47 for James Cunningham, 1 April 1809.
Folio 205: enclosure with folios 202-203. Printed form certifying John Hall to be an American citizen, signed by the collector of Baltimore.
Folio 206: enclosure with folios 202-203. Printed form from the state of New Hampshire, in which Timothy Corson of Rochester swears that John Corson is his son, aged 22 and is an American citizen.
Folios 207-209: enclosure with folios 202-203. Duplicate certificate no. 11,277 from the district of Philadelphia, saying John Selick is a native of the country, aged 17. Folio 208 is a signed form from HM Consul in Philadelphia, certifying the deposition of notary Nicholas Diehl of Pennsylvania.
Folio 209: is the deposition itself, signed by Diehl and saying that this is a sworn statement from John Selick, stevedore, that the person named is his son, John Selick, born in Southwark , Philadelphia and a native citizen of America.
