Description

Folios 216-217: Donald M'Leod [Donald MacLeod], Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Reply to letter dated 6 March 1811. He states (1) John Tones was impressed by Lieutenant William Archbold on 23 February 1811 as an Ordinary Seaman aged 23 and said he was born in North Carolina. He produced a protection for a John Hunter dated 1 December 1810. The marks expressed thereon were imprinted on his Arms. He also produced the inclosed protection for John Jones dated 2 August 1809 not expressing those marks. He therefore supposed both papers (as respecting him) to be Collusive. (2) John Baris was impressed by Lieutenant Thomas Evans on 16 February 1811 as an Ordinary Seaman aged 22 and said he was born in Philadelphia. He is a Black Man came here in the Tobin of Liverpool from New York and was reported as a native of the West Indies. (3) William Logan was impressed by Lieutenant William Archbold on 17 February as an Ordinary Seaman aged 23 and said he was born in Baltimore. He produced the enclosed protection and said he had been only 13 months at Sea. The Master of the Vessel with whom he came here (a Captain Hancock) said he had known him to be three years at Sea. He was also reported to have been speaking Irish in the Rendezvous. He therefore concluded the Certificate as falsely obtained and of no effect. (4) Whereas the cases of Hill Fabi and James Fisher (whose protections are stated to have been taken from them). He states to refer them to his letter dated 27 December 1810 and 29 December 1810. In the 27th's it was stated that Hill Fabi had no protection and in 29th's that James Fisher had most egregiously attempted to impose on the Service offering two protections, one of which he acknowledged was fitted up by the Boatswain and given him by the Mate of the Grozembo, which protections were sent to you enclosed in his said letter dated 29 December 1810.
