Description

Folios 201-202: Donald M'Leod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Advises that Joseph Bates, impressed with Isaac Bayley, and John Selick were reported in Captain Carter's letter dated 26 May. Joseph Bates was taken by Lieutenant Evans, along with Isaac Bayley, and was said to be born in New Bedford and they confessed they had come with Captain Bishop from Belfast. They were taken by Lieutenant Evans based on information from the Landlady that they had deserted from a naval ship on the Halifax station and obtained protections in America and sailed from there to the West Indies and came home in the Tiger. Being afraid of the press they went over to Ireland and returned by the Belfast Trader at the beginning of April. Advises that Joseph Bates has a brother who works as a Porter about the docks. Comments that the enclosed proof in New Bedford dated 26 July 1810 is contradictory to his being impressed on 27 April 1810. Advises that John Selick was impressed by Lieutenant Potter on 15 May and said he was born in Philadelphia. Advises he came here in the Elisa and was taken on information from Samuel William, married to Nancy Seale, who was impressed on 13 May and said that John Selick was a British Subject.

Folio 203: enclosed with folios 201-202. Certificate dated 26 July 1810 by Isaiah Weston, Collector of the District of New Bedford. Certifies that Joseph Bates Junior was born in Rochester, Plymouth in Massachusetts and is a citizen of the United States of America.

Folio 204: enclosed with folios 201-202. Certificate dated 13 September 1810 by Phineas Bond, Consul General for the Middle and Southern States of America that Clement Biddle took a deposition from ( John Selick).

Folio 205: enclosed with folios 201-202. Deposition dated 13 September 1810 by John Selick before Clement Biddle, Notary Public for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Confirms that John Selick Junior was born in the Southern Liberties of Philadelphia, is a citizen of the United States of America and sailed with Captain Gardner of the Brig Eliza in May 1809 for Sligo. Confirms after a voyage to the north of Europe he sailed to Liverpool where he was impressed on 16 May and sent on board HMS Princess.

Folio 205a: enclosed with folios 201-202. Protection document dated 28 August 1804 by Thomas Wilson, Deputy Collector of Philadelphia. Certifies that John Selick Junior is an American Seaman, a native of Philadelphia and a citizen of the United States of America.
