Description

Folios 148-149: Donald M'Leod, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Advises that John Pidgeon, 2nd Battalion 90th and John Jones 2nd Battalion 82nd said to be deserters from the army do not appear on the books at the Rendezvous but after enquiring on board HMS Princess he has found a report from the Commanding Officer that John Pidgeon was sent on board in the name of John Pearson, born in Shrewsbury. Advises that from the same Officers it appears that, John Jones was entered as a Landsman volunteer substitute for Robert Williams on board HMS Bedford in the name of John Newport. Encloses the requisite affidavit. Advises that the name William Bate does not appear on the books at the Rendezvous, nor on the books of HMS Princess. Advises that John Murray, born in [Nantwich?] entered with Lieutenant Evans as a Landsman volunteer with 2 boys all claiming not to be Apprentices.

Folios 150-151: enclosed with folios 148-149. Letter dated 15 October 1810 by Samuel Whiteley, Liverpool, to the Admiralty. Encloses documents and reports that William Bate, apprentice of William Geddes, one of the House of Messrs [?] Geddes & Co. at Warrington Glassworks was impressed and taken on board HMS Princess. Mr. Geddes obtained a warrant for apprehending the boy directed to William Atherton, a Special Constable, who attended HMS Princess with the warrant but was refused permission to go on board. Advises that it is understood that the boy was prevailed to assume another name. Asks for an order for William Bate to be given up to his Master.

Folio 152: enclosed with folios 148-149. Petition dated 16 October 1810 by Ann Murray, widow, that her husband went into the Army and died in the West Indies and she has 7 Fatherless children. Advises that the 3 eldest boys enlisted in the Army and are living in Spain or Portugal. The youngest boy, John Murray, 11 years of age, was enticed to go with 3 other boys and go to Liverpool where they were impressed on board HMS Princess. Asks for his discharge and asks for a reply to be sent to Jacksons Prowe, Manchester.

Folio 153: enclosed with folios 148-149. Certificate dated 1 October 1810 sworn before [J Clark?], Liverpool by John Newport, labourer, of Liverpool.
