Folios 233-234: Robert Mends, HMS Arethusa, off Cherbourg. He considers the importance of sending information to the Admiralty at the earliest opportunity. There was a strong gale [East E?] on the night of the 11th when the enemy's squadron escaped from Cherbourg. A duplicate of his letter to Prince de Bouilon, Commander in Chief of that station has been sent with the Albicore to Portsmouth.
Folios 234A-234B: enclosure with folios 233-234. Duplicate letter dated 12 November 1808 by Captain Robert Mends, HMS Arethusa, off Cherbourg to Philippe d’Auvergne Prince de Bouillon, Commander in Chief Guernsey. He observed that morning the enemy's ships had escaped. This must have been on the night of 11th during the strong east gale. HM's Squadron had moved to check the roads. The information has been despatched to Portsmouth with the Albicore.
