Description

Folios 227-228: Robert Mends, HMS Arethusa, Sheerness. He describes detailed information sent to Lord Mulgrave of a model cannonade with the [hide] attached on the different side. When engaging to windward, this would prevent the possibility of damaging the ship's side. The Captain asks that directions are given for the Arethusa to be fitted in this manner and for the quarter deck to be fitted with 32 lb cannonades which are lighter and more efficient. When the Arethusa ran aground on the Collorades reef off Cuba, the main deck guns were thrown overboard and an irregular set obtained in Jamaica. On arrival in England the Ordnance ordered new guns, but the Storekeeper is uncertain when they will arrive. Other guns landed from the Leyden, the carriages would need to be altered but would complete the guns for the main deck. He also asks for two 12 lb cannonades and [hides?] to be used on one of the Boats.

Folios 229-230: enclosure with folios 227-228. Note dated 8th September by the Admiralty [to Mr Clifton and colleagues?]. Direct Captain Mends to send a drawing promptly of the proposed alteration to the cannonade hides. Confirmation that the Pounders will be exchanged for cannonades as desired, but do not alter the main deck guns.
