Description

Folios 223-224: Robert Mends, HMS Arenthusa, Sheerness. He encloses a letter from Lieutenant Rees once employed under himself when Regulating Captain, Liverpool, Rees faithfully records details of the impressment of Joshua Hyde, Seaman. Hyde's friends plan to prosecute Lieutenant Rees over the impressment. Although Captain Mends and Captain Colquitt were asked by the Admiralty to assist the defence solicitor, Mr. Jarvis's advice was not to interfere with the business. Captain Mends asks the Admiralty to reconsider their decision and support the defence of a prosecution. If the matter is not defended the Officers at Liverpool would have to bear incessant and insuperable difficulties and provoke others to misinterpret the Service. Captain Mends believes that a large sum of money has been raised to pay the expenses of a prosecution. The Captain opines that the principle aims is directed at Lieutenant Rees who is a most zealous officer in spite of ophthalmic wounds received in Egypt and almost blind and would not have a fishing rod in his hand at an impressment. Mr. Jervis has completely misunderstood the matter.

Folios 225-226: enclosure with folios 223-224. Letter dated 28th August 1808 by Lieutenant James Rees, Liverpool to Captain Mends, Liverpool. Lieutenant Rees asks that this letter of information is passed to the Admiralty concerning the case of Joshua Hyde whom he impressed last 30th July. Rees states at length the details of the matter.
