Description

Folios 203-204: Robert Mends, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Responds to the query concerning William Dykes, who entered himself with Lieutenant Evans as a L M Volunteer. Dykes is aged 19 years and born in Londonderry. The Master appeared to claim him, but Dykes refused to return to that service but was determined to serve His Majesty. The Captain thought his was his duty to retain Dykes. This young man stated that if not permitted to enter the Navy, he would become a soldier. He is determined not to continue as a Shoemaker. The inclosures are returned.

Folio 205 enclosure with folios 203-204. An affidavit dated 20th August 1808 by Joseph Read, Master Shoemaker, Liverpool to the Admiralty. Read stated under oath that William Dykes was his Apprentice and entered himself with the Lieutenant of the impress ser5vice. The latter refused to release Dykes, although shown the indentures and wished to wait for the decision of the Regulating Captain.

Folio 206: enclosure with folios 203-204. Letter dated 20th August 1808 by Joseph Read to the Admiralty. Asks for the discharge of William Dykes, his Apprentice and the return of the indentures.
