Description

Folios 181-182: Robert Mends, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Responds to a query concerning John Bishop an impressed person and encloses a document. John Bishop aged 20 years and was born in Ireland. He entered himself with Lieutenant Rees as a LM Volunteer and requested to be a Clerk. There is another man who has asked for a discharge, the Captain thinks one able bodied landsman a fair equivalent.

Folio 183-184: enclosure with folios 181-182. Letter dated 2 August 1808 by [John?] Law, Alderman of Dublin to the Admiralty. He states that John Bishop, an Apprentice at his Paper Mill was allowed to travel to England to learn of paper manufacture over there. He was impressed in Liverpool on his return home and is now aboard HMS Princess. He has corresponded with Captain Mends who refers the matter to the Admiralty because the boy has apparently volunteered for the Service. Writing as an Alderman and Captain Commander of the Stephens Green Infantry, he asks for the boy o be released. The boy's father is Alderman Law's Foreman and his parents are very distracted parting with their son.
