Description

Folios 149-150: Robert Mends, Regulating Captain, Liverpool. Responds to queries concerning vatious impressed persons and encloses documents. Isaac Dixon was imprest by Lieutenant Baly as an Ordinary aged 20 years born at Ulverstone Asks for his discharge with two substitutes. Owen McKevit was impressed by Lieutenant Evans as an Ordinary, aged 27 years and born in Ireland He is a Labourer, unmarried, but admits moving around coastal places for ten years/ The affidavit is weak. James Scott was sent to the Rendezvous by the Manchester Magistrates as a Boy, aged 14 years and born in Manchester. John Scott entered with Lieutenant Clarke as a LM volunteer aged 35 years and born in Ireland. William Dedswith was impressed by Lieutenant Evans as an AB aged 27 years. He claimed to be a Master of a vessel at Flint, but had no documents He offered Evans 20 guineas to free hm. This man was impressed by Captain Cumberland in February 1806 and sent on board HMS Princess but was discharged under the pretext of having a vessel built. Four able-bodied landsmen would be a suitable substitute. John [Guy?] entered himself with Lieutenant Clarke as a Boy Volunteer aged 16 years and born in Liverpool. He stated he was an Apprentice.

Folios 151-152: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter dated 4 August 1808 by John Clarke to the Admiralty. On behalf of Isaac Dixon, impressed and on HMS Princess. Asks for two able-bodied landsmen be substituted in his place. Dixon was about two years and three months at sea but never bound. He has served four years in cotton manufacturing as an indentured Apprentice. He has an elderly and infirm mother.

Folios 153-154: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter not dated by Margaret McKevit. Asks for the discharge of her husband Owen McKevit, Labourer, impressed and now on HMS Princess. Her husband was never at sea and as stated on the affidavit, is the only support for her and two small children

Folio 155: enclosure with folios 149-150. Affidavit dated 5th August 1808 by John Morgan and [Terrence?] Burns both of Armagh sworn under oath before Thomas Molyneux, Merchant, JP, Liverpool to the Admiralty. Morgan states Owen McKevit, born in Garvaghy, County Down was impressed on 29th July in Liverpool and now on HMS Princess. Morgan and Burns concur that McKevit was never at sea but took a passage from Ireland to work as a Labourer to support his family. At the time he was impressed, McKevit was working as a Labourer or Porter on board ships at the Quay.

Folios 156-157: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter dated 6th August 1808 by Thomas [Madeloc?] Liverpool Quay to the Admiralty. Encloses the Indenture of James Scott, absconded from employment and entered the service and now on Board HMS Princess. Asks for the Indenture to be returned.

Folios 158-159: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter dated 5 August 1808 by Jane Scott, c/o William Hampton, Bolton Street, Copperas Hill, Liverpool to the Admiralty. She asks for discharge on behalf of John Scott, Shoemaker and now on board HMS Leviathian and expected to go on Foreign service. John Scott was never at sea. In an intoxicated state last June he entered on board HMS princess. He is a Tradesman of unimpeachable character and acted on an impulse while inebriated. He supports a helpless wife and family of three children.

Folios 160-161: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter dated 7 August 1808 by William [Dedwith?]. HMS Princess to the Admiralty. He asks for his discharge. He had travelled to Liverpool to buy a vessel having raised money on his small estate for this purchase, now in the hands of his Brother in Law. He was impressed and sent on board HMS Princess. He was discharged two year ago from impressment. He supports a widowed mother and sister with seven children. He hopes to find on good Seaman and one Landsman as a substitute.

Folios 162-163: enclosure with folios 149-150. Letter dated 6 August 1808 by Edward [ Poth?] Cooper, 8 Old Hall Street, Liverpool. Asks for the discharge of John [Guy?] his Apprentice Cooper who has runaway, entered himself and now on board HMS Princess. Asks for the order for discharge to be sent to Captain Colquett.
