Description

Folios 609-610: Robert Mends, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replies to the letter to Captain Colquitt of 26 [August 1807] stating that William Matthews was impressed by Lieutenant Keys on 10 [August 1807] as an Ordinary aged 18, native of Manchester. He was taken on information that he came home in the Macclesfield. Eliza Mather is his landlady. He has a mother in Manchester. It appears he went on board in a wrong name. Replies to the letter to Captain Colquitt of 27 [August 1807] stating that John Williams was impressed by Lieutenant Rees on 20 [August 1807] as an Able Seaman aged 33, native of America. He was one of a large party who violently assaulted the gang . He said that he had sailed from America 16 or 17 years but could not say where he was born. John Hughes was impressed by Lieutenant Baly on 21 [August 1807] as an Able Seaman aged 24, and said he was native of America. The American Consul's Deputy agreed with him that he could not account for where he was born and the Protection was not intended for him. Asks to be supplied with maps of America.

Folios 611-612: enclosure with folios 609-610. Undated petition from Elizabeth Mather, 1 Queen Street, [Liverpool], to the Commissioners of the Admiralty. Her son William Mather is impressed on board HMS Princess. He is only 15 and of a very delicate constitution. Asks to be able to provide a substitute.
