Description

Folios 589-590: Robert Mends, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replies to the letter of 24 [August 1807] stating that Patrick Graham was impressed by Lieutenant Baly as Carpenter, aged 31, born in Newry. He was taken on information of being a Carpenter and Shipwright used to going to sea. His conduct has been violent and abusive . He did not say he had more than one child. Replies to the letter to Captain Colquitt of 24 [August 1807] stating that John Slone entered himself on 3 [August 1807] with Lieutenant Keys as an Ordinary Volunteer aged 35, native of Ireland. He was perfectly sober when he entered. Edmund March was impressed by Lieutenant Baly on 30 [July 1807] as an Able Seaman aged 25, native of America. He produced an American Protection for Samuel Marsh which did not fit his description. He came to Liverpool in the Bedford from Boston. He is now on board HMS Minstrel. The American Consul would not claim him. Peter Woodham was impressed by Lieutenant Baly on 19 [August 1807] as an Ordinary Carpenter aged 27 born in Lancaster. He admitted he was used to the sea and said he had come to Liverpool in the Mary Ann from the West Indies. He only has one child.

Folio 591: enclosure with folios 589-590. Petition dated 22 August 1807 from Cecelia Graham, wife of Patrick Graham, Carpenter, to W W Pole. Her husband has been on one voyage to the West Indies nd was impressed on board HMS Princess on 18 [August 1807]. She has a friend who can procure 2 Landmen as substitutes.

Folios 592-593: enclosure with folios 589-590. Letter dated 21 August 1807 from Henry Hind & Sons, Liverpool, to W W Pole, Admiralty. Peter Woodhouse has served an apprenticeship to a carpenter and worked in Liverpool the past 2 years. He has been impressed on board HMS Princess, Captain Colquitt Commander. He is the sole support of his family. Offers one Landman as a substitute.

Folios 594-595: enclosure with folios 589-590. Letter dated 19 August 1807 from John Slone, HMS Princess, to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. Asks for permission to provide a substitute. He was drunk when he entered which he regrets as his wife is a cripple and he has 3 small children to support.

Folios 596-597: enclosure with folios 589-590. Letter dated 19 August 1807 from Edward Marsh to the Lordships of the Admiralty. Offers an able bodied man in his place on board HMS Princess. He came there on business from Charleston in America. He was never on board ship except as a passenger from America to Liverpool. He has a wife and 5 children.
