Description

Folios 583-584: Robert Mends, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replies to the letter of 20 [August 1807] stating that Richard Jenkins and William Johnson were protected within the 80 allowed the Trustees of the late Duke of Bridgwater but were removed from their flats and put into a new packet set up a few months ago and so he did not think them exempt. These men were taken by information and £5 has been paid for their apprehension. He thinks the Trustees should find one Landman substitute each for their discharge. Returns the enclosures.

Folios 585-586: enclosure with folios 583-584. Letter dated 20 August 1807 from A Henderson, Stafford Row, Buckingham Gate, [London]. Encloses the answer Mr Bradshaw has received from his Agent at Liverpool concerning Jenkins and Johnson who were part of the 80 protected men and that the Runcorn packet is the property of the Trustees of the late Duke of Bridgwater's Navigation. Argues their case, and asks for Captain Mends to be ordered to discharge them.

Folios 587-588: enclosure with folios 585-586. Letter dated 15 August 1807 from Thomas Poulsone, Dukes Dock, Liverpool, to H Bradshaw, Worsley Hall, Manchester. He has met Captain Mends and discussed Johnson and Jenkins but he would not agree, arguing that the protection was for the flats, and they were employed in the packet. He told him to write to Mr Pole at the Admiralty. He hopes he can prevail upon Mr Henderson to present their case to the Board of the Admiralty.
