Description

Folios 555-556: Robert Mends, Regulating Officer, Liverpool. Replies to the letter of 11 [August 1807] stating that John Deer was impressed by Lieutenant Rees on 7 [August 1807] as an Ordinary aged 21, and said he was born in America. He produced an American Protection dated 9 October 1798 for John Midler, then aged 21. He does not believe the assertions in his application. Replies to the letter of 12 [August 18078] stating that Hugh Williams was impressed by Lieutenant Keys on 20 [July 1807] as an Able Seaman, aged 25, native of Anglesea. He came as 2nd Mate in the Tarter Guineaman. He thinks 2 Landmen substitutes would be fair. William Sennett was impressed by Captain Colquitt to who he has sent the application. Replies to the letter of 10 [August 1807] stating that James Roberts was impressed on 7 [July 1807] as an Able Seaman aged 28, native of Wales. He pretended to be an American and produced an American Protection for James Nicholson but afterwards admitted he was Roberts and born in Wales. He has only one child but otherwise the letter appears correct.

Folios 557-558: enclosure with folios 555-556. Letter dated 7 August 1807 from Mary Roberts, Wrights Court, Bachelor Street, Liverpool, to J Barrow, Secretary, Admiralty Office, London. Her husband has been impressed leaving her with 3 children and aged parents with no other support. He has various ailments. Asks how many Landmen substitutes would be required.

Folios 559 - 560: enclosure with folios 555-556. Letter dated 9 August 1807 from John Deer, HMS Princess, Liverpool, to the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty. He has been impressed from a very large family who totally depend on him. He has offered 2 substitutes.

Folios 561-562: enclosure with folios 555-556. Letter dated 10 August 1807 from Catherine Williams at William Hughes, 8 Hall's Court, Chapel Street, Liverpool, to W W Pole, Admiralty, London. Her son Hugh Williams has been impressed on board HMS Princess. Her support and 5 orphans depend on him. Asks how many substitutes are required.
