Folios 208-209: George McKinley, HMS Lively, off Oporto. Reports that all the homeward bound trade vessels (23 of them) proceeded over the Bar from Oporto, and he accompanied them with HMS Leveret until clear of the coast, with HMS Millbrook joining. When thick fog cleared in the morning, he saw HMS Richmond had joined, but also saw 2 suspicious row boats near the convoy. He chased them with HMS Millbrook into Oporto, and as the convoy was then out of reach of row boats he proceeded to Lisbon to accompany the convoy from there. He had no opportunity to communicate with Lieutenant Heming of HMS Richmond, but has received a letter from him brought from Oporto. A copy is enclosed, with his order to him dated 24 April. Lieutenant Heming received Captain McKinley's order of 14 May, a copy of which was enclosed in yesterday's letter, on his arrival in Oporto delivered by Lieutenant Leach of HMS Millbroook.
Folios 210-211: enclosure with folios 208-209. Copy letter dated 2 June 1807 from R Heming, HMS Richmond, Oporto, to [Captain McKinley, HMS Lively]. Reports that he sailed from the Tagus on 27 April with the convoy bound for Newfoundland and parted from them on 4 May and made his way to Viana. On 7 May he was informed by a Portugese brig that there were 2 Spanish Privateers in Canil, so he altered course to find them. On 15 May they anchored within the Island of Serole and took on board a fisherman who informed him that the Privateers had sailed. he ordered the large Gig under Sublieutenant Bush and the small one under Boatswains Mate Ebenezer Lyons to go in search of them. They returned after destroying one gun boat. which was abandoned by its crew. He spent the remainder of the time lying at Serole making repairs, then proceeded off Viana but delayed until 26 May by the winds. He cruised there for 3 days and arrived at Oporto on 30 May, having left HMS Rapid off Viana. Bad weather on 28/29 May caused more damage, and having been ordered over the Bar by the Captain of HMS Leveret, expecting the sailing of the convoy, he made more repairs. Strongly recommends the actions of Sublieutenant Bush and Ebenezer Lyons, who deserve promotion from their current positions. P.S. Acknowledges receipt of the letter of 14 May.
Folios 212-213: enclosure with folios 208-209. Copy of orders dated 24 April 1807 by George McKinley, Senior Officer on the coast of Portugal, HMS Lively, the Tagus, to Lieutenant Heming, HMS Richmond. Orders to take the convoy bound for Newfoundland, sailing on 26 April, and proceed as speedily as possible as far west to Longitude 15.0.0 West, and then part company and return to cruise off Viana to protect the trade vessels. To continue on this service until 29 May, and then call off Oporto for any orders which will be sent to the Consul there.
