Description

Folios 202-203: George McKinley, HMS Lively, off Oporto. Reports his arrival to give protection to the homeward bound convoy until clear of the coast. It is due to sail today under HMS Richmond accompanied by HMS Millbrook until clear of the enemy tow boats. He found the convoy coming over the Bar with HMS Leveret to see them, HMS Richmond and HMS Millbrook remaining in the river. Sends a copy of his orders to Lieutenant Heming and letter to Lieutenant Leach of HMS Millbrook.

Folios 204-205: enclosure with folios 202-203. Letter dated 14 May 1807 from George McKinley, HMS Lively, in The Tagus, to Lieutenant Leach, HMS Millbrook. When HMS Richmond sails with the homeward bound trade from Oporto on 3 June, or as soon as the weather permits, Lieutenant Leach will attempt to prevent enemy tow boats or privateers from interfering with the convoy, and remain with them until out of reach of the tow boats, when he should return and cruise according to his previous orders.

Folios 206-207: enclosure with folios 202-203.. Copy of orders issued 14 May 1807 by George McKinley, Senior Officer on the coast of Portugal, HMS Lively, to Lieutenant Heming, Commander, HMS Richmond. Orders to cruise off the Bar of Oporto and its vicinity to protect the trade ships until 3 June, when he should take the homeward bound convoy safely to England. To see trade vessels bound up St George's Channel well to the north of Scilly, beyond the reach of French Privateers. To accompany the remainder to Spithead, and send an account of the voyage on arrival. To send a list of the vessels in the convoy to Captain McKinley prior to departure via the Consul at Lisbon.
