Description

Folios 170-171: George McKinley, HMS Lively, off the Tagus. Encloses a copy of a letter received from Lieutenant Heming of HMS Richmond.

Folios 172-174: enclosure with folios 170-171. Letter dated 1 April 1807 from Samuel Heming, HMS Richmond. Reports that he sailed from Lisbon for St Ubes on 15 March. Before he left the Tagus, he was informed by the Master of the Albion that he had been boarded the day before off the Rock by a Spanish Privateer. That same evening he saw a lugger off St Ubes Rock. He gave chase but lost her. He arrived at Pennice [Peniche] on 20 March and heard from the Vice Consul there that two Spanish Privateers had been there some days before. He believed that one of them, which had sailed to the south, was responsible for the attack on the Albion, and must have been the same vessel he chased on 15 March. He set off to find her, and met with 2 English brigs and a Swedish vessel which he saw safely over St Ubes Bar on 25 March. Long descripiton of his attempts to capture the Spanish Privateer. Eventually ordered Mr Bush, Sub Lieutenant, and Mr Allersley, Acting Master to go and communicate with the Battery Commander that Lieutenant Heming intended to capture the Privateer. Mr Bush reported that when on shore with the English Vice Consul, the Spanish Consul had been encouraging the Commander at Pennice to frustrate the attempts at capture. The vessel was captured. She was probably the fastest sailing vessel out of Vigo and caused great damage to the English trade. The complement of 50 men escaped on shore. The boats inder Mr Bush's command met with no resistance from the enemy.

Folio 175: blank.
