Description

Folios 162-163: George McKinley, HMS Lively, the Tagus. Sends a copy of a letter from Mr Allen, Consul at Vianna [?Viana de Castelo] to Mr Warne, Consul at Oporto, and forwarded by the latter to Captain McKinley. Captain McKinley has sent a copy to Viscount Strangford.

Folios 164-165: enclosure with folio 162. Letter dated 5 March 1807 from Richard Allen, Vianna, to William Warne. He wrote on 2 March in reply to the letter of 22 February. He was informed yesterday of 11 row boats ready to put to sea. Yesterday evening 4 more were seen chasing a vessel, and this morning 6 of them captured an English brig laden with fish, with a Bar Pilot on board, despite several guns being fired from the castle. The crew of the brig took to their boats but they were captured before reaching the shore. The brig is still off Vianna, and HMS Millbrook or any other vessel would have a good prospect of retaking her. Captain McKinley of HMS Lively informed him on 27 December that he had ordered HMS Richmond to cruise between Porto and Vianna, but it has not appeared off Vianna. This part of the coast is unprotected and the row boats will continue to triumph unless preventative measures are taken.
