Folios 142-143: George McKinley, HMS Lively, River Tagus. Responds to the letter of 19 November requesting a statement from Lieutenant Heming regarding him parting company with the convoy as stated in his letter of 30 October [1806]. Encloses a copy of Lieutenant Heming's response.
Folios 144-145: enclosure with folios 142-143. Letter dated 10 March 1807 by W Heming, HMS Richmond, River Tagus to Captain McKinley. Explains his conduct in having lost the convoy with which he sailed from Falmouth on 28 September 1806. Heavy gales on the night of 3 October caused him to have concern about the convoy, which was becoming dispersed. He signalled to make for the Rendezvous (Falmouth) and thought all the convoy had followed. He did not suspect he had parted company with them. Next morning, when he found they were not at the Rendezvous, he proceeded as fast as possible to Oporto and met them there. He saw them safely to the Bar, except for The Zephyr, which was taken by boat close to St John's Castle.
