Incorporated under South Yorkshire Joint Railway Act 14th August 1903 and composed of five companies recited in Act, viz., North Eastern, Lancashire and Yorkshire, Great Northern, Midland, and Great Central railway companies.

North Eastern Railway Company was dissolved under North Eastern and Hull and Barnsley railway companies Amalgamation Scheme 1922, dated 1st April 1922, and new North Eastern Railway Company incorporated as from 1st April 1922. Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company was amalgamated with London and North Western Railway Company as from 1st January 1922 under London and North Western and Lancashire and Yorkshire railway companies Amalgamation Scheme 1921 dated 20th December 1921, and London and North Western and Midland railway companies became part of London Midland and Scottish Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Western, Midland and West Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922. New North Eastern, Great Northern and Great Central railway companies became part of London and North Eastern Railway Company as from 1st January 1923 under North Eastern, Eastern and East Scottish Group Amalgamation Scheme 1922 dated 30th December 1922.

South Yorkshire Joint Line Committee continued with London and North Eastern and London Midland and Scottish railway companies as its constituent members until it was vested in British Transport Commission as from 1st January 1948 under Transport Act 1947.
